Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson. We will read this book about a man's journey to build schools for the people who live in the mountains of Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is a true story and has proven to be well read book around the world. The book has sold nearly 4 million copies and is in 41 nations across the globe. it is not just the story of an American who does good for other people. It is the story of how a person can overcome failure and figure things out by making mistakes, learning from them and making them successes. I hope you enjoy it.
The assignment is to read the book then answer some higher level critical thinking essays. You must also complete the vocabulary assignment. The words can be found in the index of the book and are to be defined in the context of the book. In other words, how they are used in the book and not out of a dictionary. This assignment is worth a .5

Read: Out of Gas, by David Goodstein. This is a short book that is concerned with the finite supply of fossil fuel on earth. He discusses Hubbert's Peak and the fact that the world's economy is based on oil and that we will soon be out of cheap oil. Some of the questions raised are what other resources are readily available, is nuclear energy an option, and how do we conserve energy. The assignment for this contains vocabulary that should be defined as used in the book and not strictly from the dictionary. Remember, words can often have multiple meanings. You will also be writing essays and answering short answer questions consisting of a few paragraphs.
Read: The Story of Stuff: The Secret Life of Everyday Things, John C. Ryan and Alan Thein Durning, published in 1997. This is another short book about the "life" of everyday items we consume. It is about what goes into what we eat, wear, and use. Students will read the book, keep a log of daily consumption, and answer the questions put forth here. Go to the website http://thestoryofstuff.com and watch the video. Explore the website. What is it about? What are some of the features? Is there a blog? What is it about? Answer on paper. There is also a quiz on the book. Please take notes
